The Simsbury Volunteer
Ambulance Association (SVAA) is a private, non-profit
organization, which has been serving the emergency medical
needs of the community since 1957. The Association is
primarily made up of individuals in town volunteering their time to
save lives. In addition, SVAA employs full-time paramedics 24
hours a day. The addition of the paramedic service in June of
1997 now means that the residents of Simsbury are provided the most
advanced level of service available anywhere in
Connecticut.
Volunteer members of
SVAA are State Certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT).
In order to become an EMT, members must complete a 150-hour
state-approved EMT course and 20 hours of field training.
Finally, a prospective EMT must successfully undergo rigorous
written and practical examinations. SVAA volunteers also have
advanced certifications, which allow them to use the life saving
defibrillator in cardiac arrest cases, administer medication for
anaphylactic reactions, and perform advanced airway, shock
management and IV therapy procedures.
The career paramedics
that SVAA employs have completed 1000 additional hours of advanced
life support training.
SVAA is the designated
emergency medical provider for the Town of Simsbury. The
Association responds to approximately 1300 calls a year.
In addition to
providing emergency medical care to the town, the Association has
several other public functions. Throughout the year SVAA
conducts CPR and First Aid classes as well as an annual EMT
course. You may also see the ambulance on stand-by at major
public functions like Septemberfest, the St. Mary's Carnival, and
First Night.
We recently completed
our building project. The facility is located on West Street
between Firetown Road and Old Mill Lane. The design
incorporated SVAA's old building into the new facility, which now
encompasses:
- four bay garage
- training center
- administrative offices
- crew quarters
The Simsbury Volunteer
Ambulance Association continues to serve the town's emergency
needs. We appreciate all your continued support.
